1. The initial make-up of the new drill pipe joint and the first few runs during drilling are crucial for extending the joint's lifespan. When using a new joint for the first time, it’s essential to avoid forcing the connection if the threads aren’t properly aligned. During make-up, the thread crests may occasionally jam against each other—simply back off slightly until the threads clear, then proceed with tightening. Make sure to tighten slowly, and finally secure the connection firmly using the power tong.
2. Before connecting, the threads and shoulder surfaces of both male and female fittings must be thoroughly wiped clean. After cleaning, be sure to dry the threads completely to ensure that the thread lubricant adheres properly to the thread surface.
3. When moving drill rods or placing them onto the drill derrick, always wear thread protectors to prevent damage to the drill rod joint threads. For drill rods and joints that are not in use, securely fasten clean, protective thread caps by hand—this practice is highly beneficial for safeguarding both the shoulder surfaces and the threaded connections.
4. Drill pipe connections endure tremendous torque during operation. If no separation oil film forms between the connection threads, the threads will wear and seize under this intense torque. Thread lubricant effectively provides this crucial oil film.
